The next to the last week of American Idol ever opened with a visit to finalist MacKenzie Bourg‘s hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. We get the chance to see MacKenzie enjoying the adoration of his friends, family and neighbors back home. The most poignant moment is when the young singer visits the pediatric ICU of the local hospital where he was admitted for a near-fatal heart condition earlier in life. He spoke to the kids there and had an emotional visit with the doctor who saved his life.

For his first performance of the evening, MacKenzie chose to sing “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen in honor of his hometown. American Idol judge Keith Urban loved the song choice for MacKenzie and thought it was the perfect pick for him. Jennifer Lopez said it was a “classic MacKenzie” performance. Harry Connick Jr. talked about how much the young singer has grown throughout the competition.
