The American Idol 2013 Las Vegas sudden death rounds conclude tonight when the final guys hit the stage and a final shot at impressing the judges.
Tonight the remaining 10 guys will be performing in solo acts and will be cut in the sudden death round. The judges will be making cuts at the end of the night after all the performances.
The guys who survive tonight’s sudden death round will move on to the Top 20 and America’s votes!
I’ll be watching along with you and recapping as we go. So I’ll be reviewing each of them below. Be sure to join in on the fun with your thoughts in our comments section!
The Las Vegas Round 4 performances (guys)
Mathenee Treco. I think that was Elvis’ “A Little Less Conversation,” but it was so subdued and boring that I can’t be totally sure. There were a few moments (mostly at the end) that indicated why he might think this is what he should be doing with his life. But yeah, overall, it wasn’t a great way to start the night.
Nicki’s first dumb thought of the night: She tells Mathenee that he doesn’t need to please anyone. Oh, really? I thought that’s EXACTLY what you’re supposed to do with the judges.
Gurpreet Singh Sarin. I’m not sure what happened to this guy, but wasn’t he better than this before? This was just terribly boring and off-key and yeah. I don’t even know what the song is. My Shazam exploded when I tried it. So I guess my phone hated it more than I did.
Vincent Powell. Finally, a singer! His version of “Cause I Love You” was great. It was powerful and effortless. This is what he’s supposed to be doing. No ifs, ands or buts. He’s definitely risen the bar for the night. I was afraid it wasn’t going to get very high. He should be an easy yes for the Top 20.
Nick Boddington. And Nick did a great job trying to reach that bar that Vincent just set. I really like this guy’s voice. There a are a lot of guys who are duds this season (because that’s what Idol is going for), but I think Nick might be the best of the guys. I’m really confused why the judges didn’t love him tonight.
Josh Holiday. It was nice to see someone at a piano. Josh pulled out an original song and even though that was commendable, he didn’t let loose. Like Keith said, he needed to really go for it and he kind of didn’t.
David Willis. Since I don’t recall ever seeing this guy before I don’t think he stands much of a chance when it comes time to cut. That being said, I did like his version of “Fever.” It was upbeat and entertaining. I guess he doesn’t stand out as much as some of the others, but I liked the performance.
Bryant Tadeo. His version of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” was smooth and soulful and very easy to listen to. It was a bit sleepy, but that is neither here nor there with the vocal. He’s got a great voice. I liked it. Of course the judges were iffy on it. Whatever.
Burnell Taylor. Now THAT is a voice. He is so effortless. His voice just sings on its own. I loved this performance. If he doesn’t go through, something is wrong. He actrually sounds like a recording, it’s that perfect-sounding.
Lazaro Arbos. I’m still fascinated at his story, but I don’t want my judgment to be clouded. So I can’t wait for the interviews to stop. His performance tonight was pretty good. It wasn’t amazing, but it was solid. I like him regardless.
Cortez Shaw. His version of “Titanium” was really good, but I still think I prefer Burnell. Not sure why he got the pimp spot instead of Burnell. That being said, Cortez is great and deserves to move on. And I highly doubt anyone in the pimp spot would ever get cut by the judges.
The results
- David gets his results from Mariah and it’s not good news. His Idol journey ends this year.
- Keith tells Bryant that he, too, is heading home.
- Vincent gets good news! Top 20!
- Randy lets Mathenee the journey for him is over.
- Lazaro becomes two of five to be put into the Top 20.
- Cortez gets more good news. Obviously.
- Nicki lets Josh know in her best monotone, that he’s out of the contest.
- Burnell gets good news. Thankfully.
- That leaves Nick and Gurpreet. It’s good news of Nick. So he’s on to the Top 20 and Gurpreet is cut.
