One of the coolest parts of the American Idol 2014 finale was watching American Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and Keith Urban take the stage together with mentor Randy Jackson. The American Idol judges performance was a truly an epic moment in the long history of the show and we enjoyed every second of it.
Although the collaboration on stage looked almost effortless between the four musical icons, putting it together actually took a lot of work. Apparently the real magician behind the scenes of making it happen was American Idol band leader Rickey Minor.
“It’s hard to get four leaders of four countries together to agree on something, so that’s why I come in as a neutralizer,” Rickey said after the American Idol season 13 finale.
Herding the three American Idol judges and mentor Randy Jackson into choosing the songs for their medley was one of the most difficult tasks, according to the American Idol band leader. He was asked to help out in picking the tunes, and the one he wanted them to do was “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac.
“That song came to mind, right away, because they can play, sing, it’s a three part harmony and the message is you can go your own way, Rickey said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The American Idol judges eventually jumped on board with the song, which they played in a medley along with ‘True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. With the help of Rickey Minor, it all came together as one of the most entertaining and unique American Idol judges performances in the show’s history.
