Abi Carter stole our hearts from her first note. She had the soul and talent that made American Idol contestants so memorable. She was able to convey emotions while delivering such intense but controlled vocals. Abi became an early favorite. Then she managed to continue to have these really amazing moments each week.
With such a talented bunch of contestants, Abi didn’t have an easy time making herself standout among them. But she did it. Now she’s one of the final three contestants. I can’t wait to see what she sings tonight. For now, let’s look back at some of her performances that landed her in the American Idol 2024 finale.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish
I stand by my statement that American Idol 2024 had many amazing auditions. Even with the season kicking off with high standards, Abi had one of the best auditions of the season. “What Was I Made For?” already had such a big year with its Oscar and Grammy wins, so it was definitely a risk singing it. Eilish is such an incredible singer that this Barbie song is very hard to sing for the average artist. Abi at least matches Eilish power and captures her ability to mesmerize you with this song. It makes you immediately want to cry hearing it sung by Abi. She creates the emotions of it so well.
“Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence
Abi had been giving good performances all season. However, her rendition of “Bring Me To Life” pushed her toward the front as one of the top American Idol 2024 performers. She was going to give it her all and deliver astonishing vocals. Abi became the contestant I looked forward to seeing what she would sing every week. “Bring Me To Life” showed her cover potential. We started to see that Abi could take risks and they would pay off.
“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John
“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is another favorite of mine. Therefore, I may be biased and just love when anyone can sing this song so well. Despite my bias, I think this is such a beautiful cover. It gives the song the emotion and precision it needs. It’s also one of Abi’s most consistent and hypnotic performances.
“Welcome to The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance
This is another biased pick because The Black Parade is one of my favorite albums of all time. I was immediately excited when I heard that Abi would sing this song. My excitement was warranted because she had another star-making moment with her version of “Welcome to the Black Parade.” She gives it the drama that it needs. It made me want to see a Broadway version of The Black Parade with Abi as the star.
Honorable Mention: “The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac, “Hello” by Adele, and “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid.
