American Idol 2012 Top 7 finalists

Tonight on American Idol 2012, the Top 7 will again sing for your votes. After last week’s shocking near-elimination of Jessica Sanchez, the contestants should have all been scared into doing their best this week. So here’s to a great show!

This week’s theme is “Now & Then.” That means each American Idol contestant will be singing two songs. One song will be a Top 100 hit from sometime between 2000 and 2012 (the “Now”). The other will be a soul song from before 2000 (the “Then”). Check out our Top 7 song suggestions and please join the discussion. Tell us what you’d love to hear your favorites sing.

Be sure to check back later for Matt’s live coverage of the performances and for my recap shortly after the East Coast airing. With fewer and fewer Idol finalists left the competition is getting tougher and big favorites are inevitably going to start being eliminated.   1. let’s hope the judges hold off on the theatrics and concentrate on the singing.  let’s hope the public votes for the best performance and not who looks cute.  and let’s also hope that agents are out there to sign the stars of the future whether they win or not.  and for my pal in las vegas,  LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Hey Namesake…Last I heard your Rangers are doing good.  I always root for New York teams so I’m on your side…..LOL

      I totally agree with you about AI.  These judges have to keep their opinions to themselves.  This group of judges is the worst when it comes to sabatoging the contestants.

      I really feel the cream will rise to the top.  Looking forward to tonights performances.    Not overjoyed about Kris Allen tomorrow night but it is what it is………LOL

      • rangers are up 2 games to 1, even with hagelun’s 3 game suspension (talk about unfair judging…nhl officials make idol judges look like king solomon!)  won’t see the shows until sunday – a little weekend away, you know where.  i’ll probably doze during kris allen.

      • What do you know about music? These judges rose to stardom because of their musicality and well respected in their field as artists.. their opinions matter.  Some people are just bitter to accept that their favorites are not being given the highest opinion. Come on, if you think you have a remarkable opinion on the performance of the contestants better ask AI to place you on judges’ seat.

    • Your last sentence makes no sense. I’m not voting for Phillip or Colton just because I think they are cute. Stop trying to make the voters feel guilty for having a different favorite than you do.

  4. Can’t wait! Hoping Phillip, Skylar, and Colton all have a great night. I love Elise but it’s becoming quite obvious, the rest of the country is not too fond of her.

      • I would love her to sing either of those songs but not both in the same night since that would be 2 ballads… Maybe 1 ballad and 1 uptempo can be better. Whatever she sings she will deliver. The only thing now is to get people appreciate her…

  9. Am I the only one who thinks that this year’s Idol is going lazy in
    song theme? This decade; Now and Then; Your Idol. It’s basically they
    can sing anything they want. I love it when Idol brings nice theme like
    British Invasion, Motown; or some great artists like Bon Jovi, MJ.. 

    • I think they are just doing what people have been aksing for. People have been asking for more current music.

    • I think you are the only one. Even though the themes seem wide open it still depends on whether or not they can get cleared to sing the song they choose. 

      With the themes being more open they can pick more current songs and also I think it’s great to hear some new fresh song choices instead of all the same old stuff every year. These themes allow for that and I think it’s great. 

      With them being allowed to perform more up to date material it kind of brings the show up to par with the other competitions that are on TV right now and that is always a good thing IMO.

  10. We need to make sure we keep in mind what happened last week! We can’t let these people chastise us for voting for our favorite and not theirs. Keep voting for your favorite and don’t let them down. Everyone has good and bad weeks. Sometimes you can’t base it on that particular performance. You have to look at the artist as a whole and decide for yourself who your own personal American Idol is. 

    Just sayin……..

      I’d just rather be a Jessica Pusher hater…..I don’t hate any of the contestants on the show.

  14. You know the Jessica Sanchez fans are going to be power voting this week. Be sure and do the same to keep your favorite in the show! You have to play be the rules the way they currently are. I am sure there will be big changes next year but only if we show them that it is broken. Last week was a wake up call but all it did was drum up the drama. 

    We have got to make sure they understand that the rules need to be changed for next year. 

    • Why do the rules need to be changed? Are they supposed to allow people outside the United States vote because your favorite was almost voted off?

  18. Even Melinda Doolittle thinks something was afoot with the results last week. She has stated so in an interview and she was a past contestant on the show, so she should know better than anyone. We can’t assume our favorites are safe based on the supposed outcome last week so let’s be sure and vote, vote, vote tonight.

    • It is a powerful song to sing but not for AI, not for JS. In any amateur singing competition, I usually hear this song, so it’s a no no for me. 🙂

  23. i’m worried for jessica…her grandmother just passed away yesterday and she’s very down. this plus the added pressure from last week…i think it’s too much for a young girl. God help her!

      • You call this a “pathetic attempt?” Really? Dardenelle is not asking people to vote for Jessica out of sympathy…only expressing concern for the pressure the young girl is feeling. In case you don’t follow competitive contests (i.e. sports), it is very common for the public and media to express thoughts on an upcoming performance by someone who just lost a loved one. Have some faith in people…they’re not going to vote for Jessica out of sympathy. But they will vote for her if she comes out and takes her performance to another level to honor her grandmother.

  46. The extreme emotions surrounding the Jess is easily explained. Pinoys have tried to push Jess down everyone’s throats in their over zealious Pinoy pride. Pinoys have a pushy, stubborn, rude and arrogant streak in them that collides very strongly with average Americans who are very independent and resent those who try to push things down their throats. American’s are tolerant in letting people do their own thing aka  “to each his own”, but they are very intolerant when people try to push their own thing onto them so zealously.
    I’m sure I will be ripped as a racist. I am a racist in respect that I recognize and accept stereotypes, such as “the rude and pushy Pinoys” All Stereotypes have some truth at their core. I am not a racist in that I’m thinking I’m any better than any other group of people, including Pinoys. I’m just recognizing the 500# Gorilla in the room.  Please don’t think I hate Pinoys, I do not, in some situation I respect and admire their zealous stubborn attitudes, but not in the context of the AI competition.

    • I can’t fault you for feeling the way you do because I, myself, am Filipino-American, but am also absolutely incensed and discomfited by the inane display of boorishness by SOME of my fellow Filipinos on this board.  Some remarks have have become unacceptably belligerent and I sincerely hope that such reprehensible insolence will not cause a blanket labeling of ALL Filipinos and Filipino-Americans as unnecessarily brusque and chauvinistic.

  60. first of all the only thing the judges did right is save jessica, other wise they only make idiotic comments, especially jennifer and the rest follow-it’s sickning.  Jennifer acts like she is horney for another boy toy-pathethic and disgusting. This has been the worse year of idol.  colton and phillip stunk and destroyed the songs they sang, but got good reviews from the judges-omg! the only three that sang good was jessica, joshua and skyler, the rest have to go.  My bigest dissapointment is with the judges, ie, comments like you didn’t show enough emotion, you didn’t move or dance, you didn’t smile come on ppl its about a good vocal range, pitch and tone. The songs they tried to make their own  was horrific, talk about killing a good song.  These judges are just over paid jokes, not like the judges on x factor, now they give real concreate opinions. not frivious comments.  If  AI and XFactor were in the same time slot I bet you Al could be gone in the ratings. 

  61. what is wrong with everyone, Skyler is a talented strong entertainer, she is one of the best and will go the furthest even if she dont win.  Country stands by there good singers and she will  go further than any of them.

  63. I am thrilled with last night.. I really am pulling for Hollie… I loved “perfect” and I was so happy with “rollin in the deep”.. I think she just might be the black filly of the competition… I think she could even do some Tina McBride.. she has a great voice.. style is fine.. she just needs some mentoring.. hello ? My other favorite is Phillip…he already is a winner!
