Reigning American Idol winner Phillip Phillips is going where few Idol winners have gone (so soon after winning): on tour with a major rock band.

Phillip will join Matchbox Twenty on their tour, the band announced on their Facebook page.

“Hey Phillip Phillips — It’s been really cool watching all your success this year & we’re excited to have you come out on our NORTH America 2013 tour!” Matchbox Twenty wrote.

Phillip will be jointing the band for 21 dates, beginning on Jan. 29, 2013, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Catoosa, Okla.

Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas first noticed Phillip when he performed the band’s song “Disease” during one of the competition nights last season.

“I thought he was really good,” Rob said to The Hollywood Reporter. “I appreciate what he did with it. If you’re going to be an ‘idol,’ you need to be more than just a cover artist and I think he made it his own.”

  1. I knew P2 was the real deal. He doesn’t need bells and whistles, just his guitar and unique voice and style. See ya’ll white boys with guitars can actually earn the title of American Idol which Phillip did. Jessica who? J/K she’ll be great on Glee.
