Last night the American Idol 2019 Top 14 became the Top 10 as we got the results from America’s first voting of the season. So now we are asking ourselves did America get it right? America got it mostly right. But did the judges? Let’s discuss.
America voted to put Madison VanDenberg, Walker Burroughs, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Laci Kaye Booth, Wade Cota, Laine Hardy and Alejandro Aranda into the Top 10. Most of those are not at all surprises. I wasn’t sure if America would vote for Walker if they were voting for Laine and Jeremiah. But they did. And I also wasn’t sure if Wade would be the kind of voice America likes, but apparently they do. So if I was at all surprised by America’s choices, it would have been Walker and Wade. But even those aren’t real surprises.
As for the judges’ saves… I agree with Lionel Richie saving Uche 100 percent. He is the best performer in the competition. He’s not the best vocalist, but he is the best performer. I also kind of agree with Luke Bryan’s Dimitrius Graham save, especially based on the performance. And then there’s Katy Perry.
For the second season in a row, Katy made a save that made absolutely NO sense. Last season it was Michelle Sussett and this season it was Alyssa Raghu. Alyssa is a fine performer, but when ASHLEY HESS is in the danger zone and you don’t save her I have to question your sensibility. Ashley has been a fan favorite since her audition and the fact that she didn’t make that Top 7 was surprising. But I would be willing to be everything I believe in that she was one of the actual Top 10 vote-getters. So her not getting saved is even more of a disgrace. It just makes no sense to me. Ashley is better than Alyssa in every sense. And Alyssa has had two shots at this. If it didn’t work the first time, OK, a second chance is cool. But now technically a THIRD chance? Like has this girl’s family bought off ABC or something? It makes no sense.
Maybe Katy was just so impressed that Alyssa sang a Katy Perry song? Surely she’s not that full of herself right? Well …
And social media agrees with me about Ashley. Twitter exploded last night with upset fans of Ashley. Katy Perry tweeted that it was really hard to pick one of her “children” and that she was almost in tears. And nearly every response to that tweet is about how she should have picked Ashley over Alyssa. So I 100 percent think Katy got it wrong. So, so, SO wrong.
That was such a wrong choice I am left wondering if there’s something deeper there. Were they afraid Ashley could actually come from behind and win the show? And they don’t want another female singer-songwriter winning? I mean they are clearly pushing a male winner this season (Laine or Jeremiah it really seems), so is that a possibility? I mean even two of the three judges’s saves were guys. That means there are only THREE females in the Top 10. That is insane to me.
And what’s even more silly is I fully expect Alyssa to just be one of the next to go. What a waste of a save.
What did you think of the American Idol 2019 Top 10 results? Did America and the judges make the right decisions?
