American Idol 2016 finalist Gianna Isabella came in dead last in our fan favorites poll last week. Based on that result and the trends on social media, we really were not expecting her to make the Top 8 on the show Thursday night. However, due to a last minute twist, all of the Top 10 contestants were given a chance to perform before the American Idol judges decided which two of the bottom three would go home.
During her time on American Idol, Gianna Isabella seems to have both benefitted and suffered from having a famous mom in the music business. Brenda K. Starr has worked hard to help her daughter to become a performer in her own right, and Gianna is obviously very talented. However, some fans have been put off by ‘momager’ Brenda and think her daughter shouldn’t be taking up the space of someone else who doesn’t have ‘family’ connections in the industry. Gianna’s song choices have not always been all that thrilling either, and this week’s choice of “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys was a lot more of the same.
Keith Urban told Gianna that her pitch is beautiful, but he wanted more from her emotionally. Jennifer Lopez talked about how Gianna was one of her early favorites and said everyone really gave it their all. Harry Connick Jr. notes how very grown up and adult Gianna seemed tonight and said she has a huge vocal gift.
