Charlie Askew Discusses ‘Mama’ Performance On American Idol 2013

Charlie Askew on American Idol 2013

It’s hard to think of the American Idol 2013 highlights and not come back to the pivotal performance of “Mama” by Charlie Askew. The Awkward Turtle was quickly becoming a fan favorite for his shy, uncomfortable, yet adorable persona on the show when that all crashed down with his Top 20 appearance.

Charlie was on the cusp of moving on to the coveted Top 10 and even a spot on the summer tour when he imploded on stage as his cup overflowed with teenage angst and tears. Now we’re finally hearing more on what brought on this critical moment on American Idol season 12.

Charlie spoke with Yahoo! Music’s Lyndsey Parker and explained this song choice wasn’t just at his ex-girlfriend but part of a larger “women issue” harboring inside.

Discussing his “Mama” performance, and why he was so emotional that night, Charlie says: “[The song] resonated with what I was going through at the time. I went through a pretty rough breakup in June, so like all the repercussions of that.

It was therapy, in a way, to pick a song like that–very dark, very brooding–because deep down inside for a long time, I carried around a lot of brooding angst and anger and all that. Not just for [my ex-girlfriend], but for like this female archetype, I guess–like my mother was the one who initiated my parents’ divorce, so I was kind of singing it to her as well. I went back to when I was 12 years old.”

Yeah, it’s probably a good thing he didn’t make the tour. Charlie has been through some rough times and getting some rest and support could go a long way for him.

His fans can get ready for more from Charlie. He’s been busy working on his original song “Blue Sky Diamond” along with some other hits. Can we just go ahead and assume the others are also about girls who have wronged him along the way? Hey, if it works for Taylor Swift’s cookie cutter song writing then why not Charlie Askew?

  1. I love the fact that kid like Charlie listens to and performs Genesis’ music. I mean, some of the top 10 dont even know about the Beatles. Ive always thought the winner, beside possessing a great voice, should also appreciate a wide range of music. Think about Phillips performing Phil Collins, CCR, DRice etc last year

  2. Get rid off Nicki and her stupid comments…..”do you have a girlfriend?…..I love you busty blouse…..I really love you, I could eat you… what kind of remarks are these as a judge…she is ignorant looking, I hate her voice, I always like the show, but this time I can’t stand looking at her. OUT WITH NICKI!
