Update: It is confirmed that the theme for the week is Elvis songs and MJ is reporting that a finalist from a previous season (1-7) will be performing on the result’s show Wednesday night. Any guesses?
The big news is that Adam Lambert will guest mentor the contestants during the week and sing on the American Idol results show Wednesday. Finally we will hear how a truly talented contestant should sing. Or should I say former contestant.
Ryan teased us last night by saying we have a special theme coming up for next week but then didn’t tell us what it was. I read a couple different opinions from Queen to Teen Idols but they don’t seem too realitistic to me. For one why not get the members from Queen to mentor the kids like they have in the past and as far as Teen Idols, we’ve been there and had that one dropped.
MJ seems to have the best theory. A source has told told them that Lambert will mentor the contestants in Las Vegas at the Aria Hotel where Cirque Du Soleil is performing Viva Elvis. Top Idol further confirms this by adding that Cirque Du Soleil will be featured as well on American Idol next week.
With this news I’m being led to believe that the hopefuls will sing songs by the King of Rock and Roll. What do you think?
i was actually thinking the theme could be songs by any former AI contestants 😀 e.g. kelly clarkson, daughtry, carrie underwood…. it would be interesting 😀

If they do Elvis songs that pretty much gives them the Lieber & Stoller song book which is very diverse, as well as some Neal Sedaka. Remember Clay’s version of Solitaire which Elvis recorded. Tim could do Love Me Tender giving all of us a nice nap, Lee could do Suspicious Minds, and Aaron could do Kentucky Rain. This could work out OK.

What is wrong with Adam Lambert being the Mentor…. ?
I think that one of the big problems with this year’s contestants is that they all seem to lack stage presence. If anyone can teach them how to use the stage and react/interact with the audience then AL is a great choice….
Thinking of some of the other mentors… Miley Cyrus and Usher sounded terrible when they did their songs and Rhianna and Kara’s latest crap singer from this week were so bad, I was praying for a burst ear drum.
Not too keen on the Elvis connection though.
I am sure that Tim will sing Teddy Bear and will have the little teeny boppers screaming more than a siobhan at the rocky horror show!
Talking of which.. any chance of Aaron doing a “time warp” and developing an adult voice rather than sounding like a little girl in a Barney show.
Several times this season, I as well as some other fans considered actually turning American Idol off…it didn’t seem to have any WOW factor and the singers were actually disappointing except for C. Bowersox and S. Mangus. Crystal has remained true to herself. S. Mangus had an exotic quality but the screaming high note became one note. Casey was attractive and has actually improved and shown his ability. Lee Deweise continues to rise. Last year Adam Lambert WOWed us, seduced us into anticipating every performance, but the suprise loss for the AI spot at the end made many of AI’s fans shake their heads regarding the perceived difference in talent level opposed to the popularity contest in voting. I hope that he renews the vigor, excitement and tweaks the energy with his eclectic imagination to bring about something really new, appealing and drive for our 2010 contestants…bring it on!

Couldn’t have a better mentor than Adam Lambert. He’s not only the best AI contestant EVER, but is possibly one of the greatest performers of today. However, I must admit, I wish he would keep his performances more decent than some he has done. The raunchy peformances are SO below his talent ability and SO unnecessary and could prove detrimental to his popularity.

He sure can mentor. He helped a lot of the contestants in season 8. The guy has a great background in music. He is original and will offer greater insight to this year’s contestants, that they have received from the judges. In other words, next week, for two nights season 9 will NOT be boring.

I don’t know who had the idea to bring Adam Lambert as a mentor but here, now, I stand and applaud the most wise decision ever made for the program. Adam is amazing not only a wonderful singer and flawless performer but he is humble and believable, something some of the contestants don’t have. This will be the most interesting week of this season and I cant wait to happen.

I hope this isn’t the case. Even though Adam resembles Elvis their styles are very different. I hope that Adam is mentoring on ‘The Year You Were Born’ theme. There are so many more songs to choose from, plus Adam’s strong point is picking the right song, and changing it up to fit the performer. He also did a fantastic job on that night with his rendition of ‘Mad World’. He got a standing ovation from Simon on that night, and that doesn’t happen very often.
I wish Adam could be on every week. I think Adam should be the new judge next year. I would never miss a show if he were on.
I’m OK with a show tunes week as long as Tim doesn’t sing anything from Cats! Big problem though, show tunes generally require big voices which leaves most of the pack out in the cold.

Yes, I agree I think the idols will sing Elvis’ songs. However, another twist might be that Adam will pick the songs to fit the contestants vocals, personality and age. If any one could do it and improve the overall performances of the final 9 Adam Lambert can.
Love Adam Lambert. It should be a terrific night for not only the viewers but also the contenders. Not only will he give excellent advice to each, but he will also inspire and energize each. The results should be tremendous! Oh, and I really like Sharon’s idea (above)!

Seems a gratuitous slight, Ashley. I consider Crystal truly talented and singing as she should sing. Casey is a talented instrumentalist. He may very well look at Siobhan and say that as a teen when she started, she has more talent and potential than Adam did at her age. Adam is a humble guy. One of his endearing traits – that Crystal, Lee, Siobhan appear to share.

Early Elvis was all about the blues and I hope the singers pull strongly from that era. I could see Crystal performing with only a stand-up bass and a lead guitar on “Mystery Train”. One of the other women has to do “Hound Dog”, but if Katie does it, she can’t smile. Casey has to choose between about 1,00 songs that he hit a home run on.
After he got out of the army, Elvis took some singing lessons, pitched his songs lower, and did the blues a lot less. Since Tim and Aaron don’t seem to know what the blues is, maybe they can find something in this era although they can’t sing that low.
I just hope nobody sings “Falling in Love with You”, “Love Me Tender”, or “Are you Lonesome Tonight”.

Gonna be a dangerous night for the men. Nothing looks worse than a guy doing a bad Elvis imitation. So my advice would be to not EVEN TRY!! (Except Tim, who I hate to say it – can throw out hip swiveling and charm and smiles in one of Elvis’s iconic but less vocally challenging Hollywood or Vegas show catalogue and look good doing it.)
But they can’t just sit on a stool – most of Elvis’s good stuff was attendent with energy, movement, body language. Leave it out, you have a void. Lee, Aaron, Andrew, and Big Cheese all could be headed for disaster. As bad Elvis imitators or logs sitting on a stool.

Gals – They catch a break with Elvis, interpretively. In the same sense they would be the ones that would be hurt by audience comparing their stage performance to Mariah’s if they had a Mariah Carey night “They’re no M Careys!” – while the guys would be safe and home free sitting hunched over a guitar and moaning endearing lines.
With Elvis –
There are about 200 bluesy songs that Elvis did that Crystal can rework into some decent contemporary chick blues/alternate..
Katie apparantly has worked hard on dance and has many years of working on it like her prememorized answers to what judges or beauty contest officials might ask her as part of her programming. Adam Lambert has a lot to work with, and Katie could deliver impressively (God help us, because I think of her as the Tim of the woman’s side).
And I would love to see either Siobhan or Adam had decided to confound judges and viewers expectations that Siobhan+Lambert=Glam Vegas Extravagaza routine for Siobhan’s performance. But get Siobhan into a new high risk, high reward situation. A cut down Elvis song with minimal accompaniment and bells and whistles. And a simply but discretely sexily dressed and moving about Magnus. Doing a newer version of an Elvis “reach-out” song to a lover who has (hopefully, only momentarily spurned him) and he is trying to win her back with charm, body language, emotional connection, words soaring (honestly in Early Elvis) from his heart.
A smiling, happy Siobhan throwing out the tease and soul – and power in her heart coming out in her voice – to win back a guy she wants back so much? Such as of an updated “Don’t Be Cruel”??
It could be smash. It could be hard for Siobhan to put herself in that place. It could also be better than best song of the night into “electric”.

cmon byron katie’s voice is very very original it creates these vibes and her tone of voice is close to christina’s just like randy said….very few singers have such a special voice, and sadly very few listeners appreciate such a voice

To Leopard #66:You are right about this not being Mike’s long suit, but I think Elvis’s “Trouble” from King Creole would suit him perfectly. As for Casey, If he goes bluesy with “Trying To Get To You” he’ll do a good job.
Leopard and others: You’re right in that Katie is another one with a very pure voice, what trained classical musicians call timbre. She’s not quite Siobhan, but she’s close. The problem I have with her performances is pitch. It probably has a lot to do with her age and nerves, but she does have trouble singing in pitch. If one were to look at voice quality alone, then Siobhan, Katie, and Andrew would be your top three, but singing is about a lot more than purity of vocal tone. That’s why people like Crystal and Lee are so popular. Their vocal tone is actually rather gravelly, but they sing on pitch, and we’ve come to like that gravelly sound coming from blues and folk singers over the years.
Adam is by far the best past contestant.I’ll never believe that he didn’t win,but is much more successful than the winner.If him and Carrie did a ballid together,it would be phenominal.I think he’ll make a great mentor.He hs amazing choppes,great stage presence,and totally gets what the contestants are going through.He is also humble,which will help too.I think Cyrstal,Casey,and Mike will do very well.I don’t get any comparison to Siobbon and Adam at all.Adam held out notes,always in tune.Siobban is off key,and screams.I hope people vote for voices this week,not good smile or good hair.
i dont understand Siobbon, she has nice voice, but truly weird. Chrystal good voice, but a hippie, just does nothing for me no personality, she reminds me of someone on a street corner.whos had years of practice. Casey is okay but hes a professional, so is Lee.Im sorry mike is boring hes there cause people feel sorry for him, he knows how to sing. Andrew he has all the hispanic votes even if he cant sing , and Aaron and Tim are in the same boat. Can’t Help Falling In Love would be cool, but not too many can do that song justice. Danny Boy would be a nice challenge.
Who is cool enough to do Fever? Done well, that could be a song that advances a singer along to the next level. Or, for a real challenge: Heartbreak Hotel. Jailhouse Rock was covered in the late 80’s (I think.) It is such a signature song for Elvis that the singer would have to own it themselves.
Johnny B. Goode is a great classic, but would need some good guitar chops to go with.
Kentucky Rain might be a good choice for those leaning towards the Country Side of things. While this was originally an Olivia Newton-John hit, Let Me Be There was a good, solid cover by Elvis. Could be a good tune for an Idol as it has not been covered much and could use a solid, relevant 2010 sound.
If you are considering a timeless song that could use a current cover, a singer looking for a ballad might could go with Make The World Go Away. Memphis, Tennessee might even be interesting for those inclined to r&b. Nice, bluesy rifts in that song. Same with That’s All Right (Mama). Singer can get a good grove going on that one.
What Now My Love could be an interesting challenge for a singer with good pipes. Song has lots of range and can be really dramatic if performed just right. Same can be said with You Gave Me a Mountain. These, however, would have to be home runners for the singer as they were such classics for the King. Anything less will be dismal failure. If ya gonna best the King, ya gotta be the Emperor or Empress of Sound.
Shake, Rattle And Roll might be a good choice for the more pop-rocker types. Fun tune that could be a good bye-bye song for the TV Show, but fun to watch on Concert Tour.
Hope no one considers Release Me. Never did like that song much. Way to ‘poor me’ and if any of the contestants choose that song, well, they deserve to be voted off. Lol.
There are many good releases of Elvis. Return to Sender, Teddy Bear, It’s Now or Never, All Shook up, Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Love me Tender,Shake Rattle-n-Roll.
To Cherie #81: Good choices, but this year the only one with the pipes to sing You Gave Me A Mountain is Siobhan, but the lyrics clearly dictate a male vocalist. If one of this year’s guys sang it, it would have both Elvis and Marty Robbins spinning in their graves.

Uh, I never would have mentioned it, and certainly not in the manner it was stated, but . . . since the topic was introduced, well, it’s true that all caps IS considered yelling. And it truly is irritating to most readers.
It’s one of the first things you learn about computer etiquette. All caps is irritating to lots of people because it reduces readability. (Upper and lower case letters are easier for people to read.)

you should focus on your work instead of replying comments using caps 🙂 i don’t actually hate caps tat much (but it is certainly annoying when it gets to certain level) but i dont see any reason why cant you write comments on this website when you get back home or when u get to use PCs which enable you to type using no caps

@Phyllis: Sorry to say it, but the ALL CAPS complaints are justified. I understand that you use ALL CAPS to type at work, but the Caps Lock key is just one quick keystroke with the left pinky.
At this point I’m not planning to ban ALL CAP’ers, but like others have noted I too normally skip right over anything in ALL CAPS.
Since some of you seem so focused on my typing and not the subject at hand, which happens to be American Idol, I will use my left pinky and release the cap lock…..Now can we get back to commenting on American Idol and Season 9??????

Phyllis, I was disappointed in most of the performances on ELVIS night. I really liked BIG MIKE’S ~ In the Ghetto. Nothing else really inpressed me. I am a huge Elvis fan. And it would be hard to listen to other people sing his songs! I like Dwight Yoakham’s Suspicious minds. Sounds great when he sings it.PS, HOPE THIS DOES NOT ANNOY EVERYONE. What blew me away is that most of them picked Elvis songs that are almost cliche’ by now. They missed the opportunity to stand out with songs that they had a better chance of making their own. But, I don’t know if Elvis’ entire catalog was available to them. Poor Andrew. I thought Mike went a long way toward deserving the save.
Actually Canyon, not all the songs where ‘cliche’. Had to go look up 3 of them, lol.:
Saved; A Little Less Conversation; and Baby, What Do You Want Me To Do. I vaguely remember ‘Conversation’, the other 2 I had to research. While Elvis used Lawdy Miss Clawdy quite a bit in his shows, it is not really his best radio standard or a signature song. (Although many Elvis Impersonators do include that one in their repertoire. Maybe that is what you mean by the cliche part?)
I do agree lots of prime material was out there left untouched, but hey: these kids grew up on artists that were only ‘influenced’ by Elvis. Elvis belongs to their grandparents generation. YIKES!!! That’s me. Sigh. Well, almost.
Elvis was in his Glory Days in the 50’s and early 60’s, on a ‘come back’ in the 70’s. However you slice and dice it, this AI Contender Group did songs made popular 30 – 40 years ago. Hat’s off to all of them.

Imo I think Andrew might be history after last nights performance….They keep panning Siobhan but I really like her. She is different….Crystal came out of her shell last night. Lee was awesome…Katie is the dark horse, she has some vocals……Even Tim was good last night….I’m still not crazy about Mike….I think it should be Mike & Andrew. Hi everyone. I am also retired with a young spirit and like the modern music as long as is not nonsense shouting and wrap, crap. Wow, Wow Wow Adam, true talent. With guidence Siobhan can be good as well. She must just not say too much when critic is given but take it all in. Adam did that and still followed his own path and taste, becoming an indivdual and in a league of his own. THE STUPID PEOPLE WHO HAVE OPINIONS OF HIM BEING GAY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. I don’t condone being gay but it surely does not affect his singing talent and that is what is important. He should be the next judge. Ellen is good but what does she know about music, the next judge should also have knowledge of music as well as being or have been in the music industry themselves.
