Although there have been gay American Idol contestants in the past, MK Nobilette has the distinction of being the first finalist to ever openly come out on the show. This decision has put her in the spotlight as both as a source of inspiration for LGBT youth, and as a target for anti-gay hate.
“There have been a few haters, but I predicted that the minute I said it,” Nobilette told PEOPLE of her decision to publicly announce her sexual orientation. “But actually, the response has been pretty positive. Mostly, people have been really supportive.”
MK’s biggest fan, naturally, is her partner and vocal coach Casey Ellis. While they both mutually call each other “wife” online, they don’t appear to actually be legally married yet. Regardless, it is obvious Casey couldn’t be more supportive of MK and her bravery in coming out on American Idol.
Even though she says she didn’t intend for her coming out to “be blown up” in the press, MK Nobilette says she is okay with the added spotlight.
“I am very proud to be a role model to younger queer people,” MK told Zap2It.com. “I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback and it’s actually turned out for the better. I see no reason to hide it. I’m proud to be gay and I don’t see why that would be something to hide.”
Love MK. Beautiful inside and out.
Baloney. Her aim is to make other people uncomfortable. That’s not “beautiful” inside or out It’s childish and selfish.
The fact that other people will be uncomfortable is NOT her problem.
Her aim is to be herself — to be happy with who she is. She is apparently succeeding much better than you are.
Agreed…..as we careen toward Sodom headlong.
Being gay myself and androgynous in appearance I have not aim, but, to be myself. I see the same in MK. She has not changed anything since arriving at the show. Her appearance throughout has been the same. If you are uncomfortable that is your problem. Perhaps, you should look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are uncomfortable with yourself. Best wishes in being your authentic self!
“Younger Queer People” . Gimme an Fing break.
You are a sad, sad, little man.
Grow up!!! Talk about childish. You are definitely being triggered by something, that is causing you to lash out at someone you don’t even know. The threat is not her it is something inside of you that threatens yourself. This kind of vehement reaction to another person is not normal. And to be this uncomfortable with another human being only shows how uncomfortable you are with the pressures you feel to express yourself truthfully. The labels and pressure we put on people to dress a certain way are all created by our culture. They are really artificial ways to control people. There is nothing that she is doing to be threatening. Take a deep breath and relax. She may not play the kind of music you like or even be a person you are draw to, but, your reaction is really overboard.
She is not that good and should have never made the trip to Cali. Very pitchy. Not sure why they still have her on the show. It’s not her singing.
She did an incredible job with John Legend’s, “All of me!” Since then, I feel her nerves, but, none of these singers are pros. The coaches agree very often that she “has the vocals”, I tend to agree, but, she’s definitely not for everybody…. no singer is!
Very talented and a real cutie… gotta love her!
Shes True beauty and talent have never wanted someone to become famous as bad as her, so i can hear more music and see more of her ! you are defiantly the biggest star in my eyes ever ! I love you not only as a musician and your voice but as a person. Thanks for being so open and true, kind & lovable. i’m older than you 25 and i’m now looking up to you as a role model i’m a lesbian and a musician and I’ve never been so proud. Takes courage for what you did whether you intended anything of it or not, pro choice ! Keep On Keep N On!
