This week on American Idol 2013, the Top 7 will take on classic rock songs. And finally, after 12 seasons, production has finally realized they have some power. They’ve banned ballads this week. That means everyone must sing an up-tempo song! Yes!
I wish they’d install one more rule: No Queen. Or at least no butchering of Queen. Some things are just too sacred.
So what should the Top 7 sing? The following are my suggestions.
Candice Glover, “River Deep Mountain High.” I know this has been down before on American Idol, but I’d love to hear Candice take on the song by Tina Turner. It’s so high-energy and powerful and just an amazing song. Candice could kill it!
Kree Harrison,”Crazy on You.” Oh. My. Gawd. Could you imagine Kree doing this fantastic rock classic by Heart? When I thought of the song my mind immediately raced to Kree. She has to do this.
Burnell Taylor, “Painted Black.” Burnell has that 1960s soul voice that could easily translate into 60s rock, so I think this Vietnam-era Rolling Stones song could be just the right choice for Burnell.
Janelle Arthur, “Piece of My Heart.” There’s been a country version of the Janis Joplin classic already, so it would be easy for her to put her country spin on the song. This would also be a pretty good choice for Kree.
Lazaro Arbos, “Don’t Stop Believin.” I’m not sure this is Lazaro’s week since he’s more of a ballad singer (which is probably another move by producers to get Lazaro out). But he could take on this Journey hit and handle it the way Glee handled it. He’s more of a Glee-like singer anyway, so it could actually work out.
Angie Miller, “More Than A Feeling.” This might be too slow for the theme, but probably not. I think she could start this off on the piano then break it down when the band comes in.
Amber Holcomb, “Go Your Own Way.” I’m going with this Fleetwood Mac hit just because someone should sing it. I don’t ever really fit Amber into any particular genre or wheelhouse, so she’s always hard to pick songs for.
What do you think the American Idol 2013 Top 7 should sing?
love, love, love your choices!! especially for kree. she would blow it right out of the water!! at the beginning i thought that angie would run away with it but the more i think about kree i think she’s got it in the bag.
I think you’re right. This week feels like it was designed for Kree. Should be an awesome show on Wednesday.
Bwah! It’s “Paint It Black,” dude!
And Power Ballads (“DSB”) are still…..you know.
Painted Black? Purleeeese… it’s Paint It Black. And, erm… who is Kieran, referred to above in the AI blurb? Do you mean Ryan – dimming the lights on the second show last week?
Joannie,Ryan Is talking to some of the crew in the back. Evidently Kieran is lighting. I agree with Branden. Kree should sing Crazy on you! Perfect for her voice Branden! I also agree on your song for Candice. Not too sure about the song for Amber? I think maybe she could pull it off? But Stevie Nicks is just a one of a kind singer. I am not sure with Ambers big singing voice that would be a great song for Amber. She really is hard to pick a good song for..
It would be a great week for Kree to cover an Elton John song. Perhaps something like Rocket Man. In fact getting Angie back to the piano is very important. Elton John would be right in her wheelhouse also. I know Tina Turner for Candace seems a natural fit. I think the old Kansas song Dust in the Wind would be a song she would kill. Anything by Journey or perhaps even Queen. She and Kree would murder queen and not many singers can.
For Janelle what about a Niel Young classic like Old Man take a look at my life…. Not sure what the actual tittle was as I’m old and senial. In fact I thought this would be a tough week for Janelle. But there is alot of country cross over with good country covers but perhaps it will be her taking a classic rock song and rearrange it. Hope she survives.
Poor Burnell is destined to be in trouble. He has 1 hope and that’s a rock ballad. I think he’s in trouble. Maybe he takes a big chance and tries to cover American Woman not sure that’s a good fit mind you. Amber should pick an old classic rock standard and belt it out.
Does not matter what Lazaro chooses as he picks up Devin’s vote this week he need not even perform he’s safe. If Burnell surprises we could get or 1st lady eliminated on Thursday. I’m betting Burnell though you can get a better feel for it after the performances.
Candice couldn’t do Dust in the Wind because this performance night because the song is a rock ballad and ballads are strictly off limits this week.
I didn’t know that they were not permited ballads this week TY.
Old Man is the song but folk is closer to the genre.
Rocket Man would also be pushing it in regards to rock genre.
They seem pretty relaxed in regards to genres on this show though so who knows.
Paint it black seryously? Sing it after Siobhan version is be a fool (sorry for my english)
I think Janelle could do House of The Rising Sun. I know this is a weird choice but I think someone among them shall sing this. Just an opinion.
Angie – Carry on My Wayward Son
Kree – Life in the Fast Lane
Candace – I Want to Know What Love Is
Janelle – Dog and Butterfly
Amber- Love is a Battlefield
Burrell – When Doves Cry
Lazaro – Puppy Love 😉
Amber.. Dancing in the streets..
there are so many classic rock ladies to pick from – I would really like to see the girls get down and dirty with something from Pat Benetar, Gracie Slick (Jefferson Airplane/Starship) or Joan Jett and just let go and fly. I would just like to see something totally unexpected. Stevie Nicks, JanisJoplin,TinaTurner and Heart have been done quite a bit already. I don’t really care what either of the guys sing this week as I don’t think either of them could do a true rock song justice and I think that AI has set this week up that way.
Bon Jovi could work for Janelle a lot of their stuff leans towards country.
